It makes it a lot easier to see what's going on if you remove the temp/gas gauge. Then you can look down through there while getting at it with the screw driver from underneath.

not a solution, but if you've got a cruise-o-matic, the tranny cooler lines are probably helping to keep the radiator in place as well.

I installed a new 180 degree thermostat, a 7 blade flex fan, flushed the coolant and put in the shroud. The temp gauge reads on the right leg of the "M", occasionally going as high as the left edge...
