New Detent Plates for 1958-1960 Thunderbirds available.

I have made and received a run of detent shift plates for the 1958-1960 Thunderbird. Get them while they are still available.

These plates are a necessary part to rid your 1958 1959 1960 Thunderbird of sloppy shifting and popping out of park. If your shift lever or shift collar are worn, you need to replace these also.

The part replaces the worn detent plate in the shift flange.

The column shift assembly for an automatic transmission car is shown here:

For more information and to order click here: http://www.squarebirds.org/detent_thunderbird.htm .

Instructions for installing the detent plate can be found here: http://www.squarebirds.org/detent_installation.htm

I have calculated out the postage to Norway and to the United Kingdom. There will be no extra charge. The $2 shipping will cover the postage and the packing envelope. Unfortunately, I will not be able to track foreign shipments as I can with domestic shipments.

It's from the 1949-1959 Ford Illustrated Parts book. Some of the Thunderbird vendors use these lllustrations in their catalogs.

I sent out the first shipment to those orders that I received by Sunday. I received a few more orders by mail today. I will send them out this week.

I had wanted to put tracking on the packages, but the post office has a bizarre requirement that the package needs to be at least 3/4 inch thick to get the first class rate. If I wanted to track the packages I would need to pay $4.05 for Priorty Mail per package plus the tracking fee.

You should all receive the orders within a week. The international orders were also sent out today.

I am glad you received it so soon. I would like to hear your experiences installing the plate and how it improves how the car stays in park.

I just put the new detent plate in my 1959 Hard Top. It has never been so firmly in park! The old detent plate resembled the one on my 1960 with the wide park slot. It may have been a midyear design change. I would like to know of the variations of detent plates that you find.

I will be making up improved detent plates for the 1961-63 Thunderbird shortly. Today, a good friend of mine had his 1962 Thunderbird pop out of park and into reverse. The car went through his garage door.

My car should be coming back from the paint shop in a couple of weeks, and then I will be putting in the new dash pad. I know the wheel has to come off so that will be a good time to install the detent plate. I'll let you know how that turns out.

Hi Alexander.
Installed my new plate yesterday and that lever now LOCKS into park - it's GREAT! It actually "clicks" into place.

Everything went together just perfectly.

My '60 had the typical '60 design with the wider oval. I don't know why Ford decided to change that detail - the narrower oval seems more secure.

thanks again for all your work on this!

RE: New Detent Plate Installed today

I just completed the installation of the new Detent Plate in addition to repairing my horn (spring loaded push button behind steering wheel not making contact with steering wheel plate for rotational contact). It seems to be much better, but I might also need a littel adjustment on my linkage (just had trans rebuilt). It is a little hard to get into Park.

A couple of extra hints should be added to the instructions.

1. Bushing Removal: It has a radial slot. Place a screw driver in the slot and tap on the handle end of the screw driver with you hand so as to rotate it. It is just slid onto the steering wheel shaft. After is freed up and can rotate, place the screw driver under the lip of the bushing and pry it up a little. At this point, the bushing can be seen and deleniated from the other parts. Now just slide the bushing up the steering wheel shaft by hand until it comes off. This is not explained well enough in the instructions.

2. The two bolts with square heads at the 11am and 5pm position: These have a purpose as I found out. When reinstalling the chrome bezel (which has the detent plate on the back), the two square heads need to go into the two square slots in the steering column tube at the 11am and 5pm position. When the chrome bezel is in place and the two bolts have the nuts run on them only about the thickness of the nuts, hold and wiggle the bolts as you tighten them so that the square bolt heads go into the slots. The bezel has stops that prevent the bolts from turning. As you tighten up the two nuts, the chrome bezel will tighten up against hemispherical shaped part of the steering column by sucking down the bezel to the steering column/square slots. The two bolts hold everything tight. If they are not secured in the two slots, everything will be loose and the shift lever will no go into the detents. And you cannot see if they are in the slots, you just have to feel it by the successful tightening of the assembly as you turn the nuts. It might be easier to have the shift lever in the large netural slot for the bezel re-installation rather than the very small slot in the detent for Park as you try to tighten and hold everything at the same time. Not hard to do knowing this additional information. This is not explained well enough in the instructions.

I am nearly sold out of this run of 1958-60 detent plates. I have almost one hundred satified customers. If you have not yet replaced your detent plate, now is the time to order. There might be a price increase with the next run as costs have increased for me.

To order go to http://www.squarebirds.org/detent_thunderbird.htm .

Detent Plate

DJPEPE AND OTHERS

I can attest to the quality of Alexanders detent plate, as I installed one in my 58 last winter. It not only provides a solid secure position, for you shift lever but it is better than the original. In some cases as mentioned on this site " see detent plate" in search field older cars with worn detent plates had serious movement once someone shut the doors in a running vehicle due to the plate being rounded and worn.
I strongly recommend all older birds, order them and get them installed.
