Need help with cowl drain measurements
As you all know, none of our cars have functional cowl drains after nearly fifty years. No one makes them.

If you have never seen a cowl drain, they should be located behind the splash guard behind the front wheel. You just need to unbolt the splash shield.


I had an engineer make a drawing of a modern cowl drain for the 58-60 Thunderbird. It does not look like original, but it should work better than the original. It will be made out of modern rubber, so it will last for decades.

The original duckbill design is prone to closing permanently if exposed to heat and is not exposed to water occasionally. This probably accounts for many of them ending up in the bottom of the fender. They close up, then when finally the old car is washed, it is pushed out of the hole.

This PDF drawing is being submitted for a quote. It may have a split-closed tube at the drain end instead of a open-tube, but the dimensions will remain the same. Measurements are in inches.


I need your help. Please look on you cars to see if this will fit with no interference. I measured the cowl drain hole as 2 1/8 inch. Please verify this. I have pneumonia and am unable to get to my Squarebirds. (I still have low-grade fever and weakness, but am slowly getting better.)

Please keep this design to yourselves. Please do not redistribute it. I will remove it from the site tomorrow night, so print it out now.

Mine also measure 2 1/8 I have a question I know the water drains from the top of the cowl to the bottom through the metal tube behind the splash shield into the rubber boot you are making, but then does it just drain onto the metal on the splach shield and fender or should there be holes drilled for the wter to get out

The Ford engineers obviously did not take care to prevent rust forever. The original cowl drain water just dumped down into the lower fender/splash shield area, and would drain through the gaps of the splash shield. This leads to the rust out seen in the splash shields and fenders of the Squarebirds. With this new cowl drain, you will be able to modify it to attach a tube and have it drain out of the body. This would necessitate in adding a small hole in the bottom of the splash shield.

What is the orientation of the third attachment?

Hi alexander. The 60 is next on the stands. Just got done the freeze plugs on the 66. I have to put the vac tank in the 60 for the brakes. I'll let you know what i see.

Alenander I put the camera inside the cowl by the windshield wiper to show the hole where the water drains down from the top

Great angle. Is that looking straight down? Does it look that there is any openings going inside the car in that cavity? Before plugging up my cowl drain holes with a contraption I made of grommets and tubes, I would have mice get into my car.

This is a thread that I found in another part of the Forum by Alexander and I decided to move it up here into the Squarebirds Forum. I will probably put this information into the TRL for posterity since so many have problems with cowl drains and rust problems

I say just leave the holes open. I opened up access holes on my car, and vacuumed out a TON of crap on both sides.
