Starter Removal - 60 HT with 430
 
I need emergency help !!!

I have a 60 HT with the 430 engine.

I have read the threads on starter removal, but still can't get the starter out. I have loosened the motor mounts and jacked the engine up as far up as it will go. The starter will go forward, but gets wedged in between the engine block and the cross member. There is still about 1/2 inch of the starter drive in the bell housing.

I have also tried to rotate the starter downward, but the cross member is in the way, so that doesn't work either.

Is there anyone out there who have removed a starter "specifically" from a 1960 with a 430 engine???

My health is not good, and I can't leave my wife with this mess.

I am also willing to call anyone in the USA that might help.

I was told by a 430 guy that you have to "remove the engine" to repl the starter. He knows his TB's so I dont doubt it. Scary !!

I "really" hope that there is an alternative to that.

I need to talk to someone like that who has actually do it. If that's what it takes, then, so be it. But I have to know for sure.

Hello I'm not sure but you might have to drop the H pipe. Not a fun job. Or try and take the drive off before you pull it out? just a thought. I'll see what the manual says and get back to ya. Take care.....................................Bill

We looked at taking the H pipe off. It looks like the stud on the manifold might block the starter. So, the manifold might have to come out too. Can't tell for sure.

That's the problem, no one that I know has done it before. Someone out there must have done this, and hopefully will respond with what needs to happen. My 60 shop manual says nothing about removing anything to get the starter out.

Dave is a font of knowledge on the Lincoln 430 motor and trans and is currently restoring his 1960 Lincoln Continental after previous ownership of these cars.

As i own a Lincoln 430 Bird he has always helped me and has always been right!

Send him an e-mail with the subject box LINCOLN 430 HELP!

Explain to him in that e-mail that Kevin in England has passed you his e-mail for help on your 430 Lincoln.

As of today, I have sucessfully replaced the starter.

It was a tough job, in a tight space, involved jacking the front of the engine up to the firewall, and disassembly of anything in the way. This included trans and carb linkage, and also dropping the exhaust headers on both sides. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

In the next few days, I'm going to put a post as to how it was done, step by step. I hope that it will help someone else who owns a 430.

LINCOLN Specific Removal
 
On a CONTINENTAL, the right exhaust manifold has to be removed (suggested method) and the engine slightly raised. Does it appear with the exhaust manifold out of the way that the starter motor can be pulled more easily?

I don't know about the Continental, but he 60 T-Bird has a crossover "H" pipe. Removing only the right hand side didn't allow the exhaust to drop down hardly at all. So, the left side had to be removed also. In addition, the muffler clamps hangers at the rear had to be unbolted so that the entire H pipe assembly could be lowered.

As far as being able to remove the starter more easily by doing this -- it is impossible to remove it otherwise in a 60 with the 430.

Regarding my last post:

I see that you said exhaust "manifold".

I did not have to remove the exhaust manifold. Removing the manifold would still not give enough clearance to get the starter up through the top. Besides, we were very worried about breaking a manifold stud -- and having REALLY BIG problems. The exhaust flange nuts came loose easily after spraying them with penetrating oil. Removing the exhaust header pipes allowed the starter to be taken out from the bottom.

You still have to raise the engine up very far to be able to pull the stater forward. The 430 starter has a shaft with starter drive attached that is about 7 inches long. getting the starter to go 7 inches forward to clear the starter drive is the entire problem.

I guess I'm alittle late here. I looked in my motor man. chilton man. and shop man. They all say tilt it a little (like that would work). I think you have to do the same as you did with the 352 also. Glad to hear it's fixed. Later.......................Bill

For completeness, I had to remove the starter motor of my 1959 with 430 ci engine and to get it out I did not lift the engine.
I did also not remove the exhaust header, however I did have to remove the exhaust pipes on both sides (the V-shaped piece).

All in all it took me only x( 2 hours......

Running into difficulty removing my starter as well. I have sprayed the bolts on the passenger side exhaust pipe. The thing that is scaring me is as hard as it is trying to get it out, itís going to be just as hard getting it back in.
Manual doesnít get to in-depth with it. Unless Iím not reading the right page (1,1, 11,2 & 11,3 17,2)
I see some people saying drop the exhaust and manifolds, steering linkage and jack up the engine. Crossmember in the way while I have also read just twist it. Has anybody else had a work around to remove and install the starter?
