Hi Everyone,
Here is some news and some updates on the power sunroof that was posted in the ODDITYS page on this website.
I purchased this whole roof!, Dave and Paul of New Hampshire went out with a power hacksaw and trunk and trailer and got the lot for me.
Once they had it home i then sat about trying to find a way to ship it to England (i must have been mad in the mine at the time)
Then a stroke of luck, we had posted on the For Sale forum here a lovely white 430 Sunroof in Boston MA so i purchased that beast so Bang! went the new kitchen and bathroom for our home.
Dave then drove to Boston and put the roof section in the Trunk of my new Bird before the car was shipped to England. This involve countless phonecalls on where he should cut the metal and not what to cut so it would fit in the Trunk. The day came for me to travel up to London to collect the new T-Bird and drive the 280 mile trip home with the roof section inside the trunk as this was the first time i drove a 430 car it was just the power i needed but the fuel bill i did not.
The roof section was takin out and layed on the floor to see what goe's where and looking at the manual roof there is hardly any difference, even the side rails screw in the same place and all holes match up. The main difference is the front of the opening where the drive section sits but this section can be weld in place same with some other parts its just a case of cleaning then painting afterwards. The new T-Bird will be going to a well established company in London with a Gentleman who has been involve with these old sunroofs for over 45 years. I have spoken with him alot and he did confirm the power roof is genuine! Golde roof and he has the blue prints for this roof and the numbers all match the one i have just purchased.
Golde as we know held the patents on the roof and the power roof has the same opening as the manual one 43x19 inch opening (approx)
looking at the roof and the way it was made and fitted to the car it had to be factory fitted so did Golde visit Wixom to fit it or was the conversion done later but this scrap car did leave wixom in 1960 a Golde top for sure.
I will be posting photos in about 4 weeks on my members site of the whole process from manual to power roof and shots of my other Golde Top.
Dave in NEW Hampshire took some stick from some fellow T-Bird clubs about his fined and that he was a liar and Ford did not make a power roof.
Well to those who did your Right! Ford did no power roof but they did not do the manual roof either, Golde did! and i am glad i made the purchase and now will soon have written confirmation on the parts and the part numbers. But as this roof is from Europe i would have access to more information on them and the company Golde, in fact it will be fitted by a time served Golde sunroof installer at his company.
The moral in the story here is dont slag someone off about there fined until its been fully checked out as i have wiring diagram here for the power trunk release for a 60 T-Bird but i have never seen one but that dont mean it was not avaible same goes for the power locks too.
Thanks for reading and this whole process has made me a good friend in America who just wanted this roof back in a car and not in a breakers yard. Dave is a Ford fan and owns a Fully Loaded and mint condition 59 Retractable, which i do like.

It is great how you are documenting this exciting find. Gratefully Dave and Paul gave me the VIN number of the car that originally had this roof, so that bit of information will not be lost.

From what I understand, the front part of the roof opening is different on this car and it looks like it always was like this, not just patched in.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of this roof and its components.

The front part is different but was not patched in from what i can see but could have been done by Golde contractor (ASC) specialist 45 years ago.
The stamped panel that house's the manual roof is the same on the power roof too. the underside of the sliding panel on the power roof is different as it has a curve in it to match up with the hump on the front lip of the roof. and has the lifting catches to lift the back of the panel in line with the rest of the roof BUT STILL RETAINS THE ROUND HIGH LEVERS
Talking with the sunroof restorer here in England he has mention to me that Golde would have not gone to great expense in the old days on the difference between the manual and power roof because of tooling costs.
I can't wait to see the finish product as you know the 430 Sunroof i purchased is just loaded with everything you would want and the power roof is just a nice toy to play with. However it would be better on safe driving to have the power roof as the switch is mounted on the drivers dog leg beside the windsheild washer switch. You would not need to stretch you right arm just use your left index finger.
As you know on your own sunroof the front panel is weled in the the stamp panel, just look on the corners you will see the gap and small blobs of weld. Perhaps this is how Golde offered a power roof or the cheaper manual one.
I think we will never know if it left wixom power operated or not but i will sure keep trying to find out as the last know power roof was found in 1973!

By round high lever, I assume you mean these pieces:

If you have any pictures of the roof now, please e-mail them to me, I can post them.

I don't think that you really mean to say "ASC". ASC {American Sun Roof} was founded in 1967, and that would be just 36 years ago. Their very first Sun Roof went into the 1967 Mercury Cougar, and a tiny handfull of 1967 Mustangs, for VIPs.

I am not sure if Kevin is trying to say that Golde sold the rights to its technology to ASC, or if they merged with ASC, or if they became ASC. I know that Mr. Golde eventually went into the ultrasonic welding business http://www.staplaultrasonics.com/company.htm .

The rights were sold off to ASC and the Rockwell company that join forces with Golde..both no longer are around.
The company Golde deal with are in the link that Alex has posted however, Golde products can be found with the Meritor and Webasto sunroof corparations now.

Also ASC were found in the late sixties but sub companys and craftmen went under there arm for future work and contracts. The post i put about the 45 year gap would promp question but this is what i meant in my previous post so i am sorry but i hope you now know what i meant.
This power roof is a great find! and i would say it will not be found again so this is a great input to the Squarebird.org website.

I would be interested to know the exact year ASC was Established as i have conflicting written documents here in various books about the company.
From what i see the company did not get its act fully intact until 64-65 but were trading 5 years before but not at a great scale. I have books here stating that some Golde tops left Wixom to have the Golde roof put in at ASC sub contractors, and some saying Wixom had there own producting line for the Golde Tops. I would say the company did not get realy going until mid to late sixties as some sunroof installers were formed in the early sixties but did not last the pace and died hence possible some confusion with start dates of some company.

This is where I get my information from - regarding ASC (American Sunroof Corp.) and there other subsidyaries (I know, spelt wrong), but I just came from Eye Dr, and have drops in my eyes and can't see anything! Actually 3 hours ago, and I'm still blurry.... any how...

Aeromotive Systems Corp. & Automotive Specialty Corporation.

I only know what they tell on that site. Things not told, I have no clue.:(
