    Steering column

    Hi guys,
I'm in the process of reinstalling all of the dash wiring hat the previous owner had removed.

There are two sets of connections on the bottom of the steering column one with straight connectors and one with round.
Which one is which? Also the round pair of connectors are they the same type as the rest under the dash or are they a different type, as the wires that I tbought should plug I to them don't seem to want to go.

The shifter light, does the wiring plug into the rest of the dash illumination circuit?

How do you remove the shifter globe for replacement?
I got it to light up but it made funny arching sound.

    Thank

    Dave

    Hope this picture will help.
One contact is the Neutral Safety Switch (car has to be in park or neutral to start) the other contact is the back up lights.

(the rubber ring you see should be at the firewall but I had it slid back here for some other work and the little blue square wire tap is for my Cruise Control )

Might search the posts - seems someone else just recently worked on their steering column stuff - can't remember right off who it was.

There is some info on the steering column in the TRL also.

Bullet connectors are supposed to be tight. If you don't have enough strength in your hands, use two pairs of pliers. The connectors kinda snap into place when properly seated and they never fall out.

Do you have a wiring diagram? If not, get one from our TRL.

The diagram may indicate a wire is Blue/Yellow. That could mean it is a blue wire with a yellow trace OR a blue wire with a yellow END cap. Pay attention to this convention because it changed from vendor to vendor. Also, after fifty years wire colors can change so pay attention to colored areas that are covered from the sun or sand off a 'test area'.

At the dash, you will find these bullet connectors:

      Blue/Yellow <--horn button
Blue (which can also mean, 'blue/blue') <--from flasher unit
      Green/Orange <--LH stop/turn lamp
Green/White <--LH dash directional lamp and front signal lamp
Green <--from stop light switch at the master cylinder
White/Blue <--RH dash directional lamp and front signal lamp
      Orange/Blue <--RH stop/turn lamp
      Blue/Red <--all instrument lamps

At the base of your column, closer to the firewall, you will find a 'Neutral-Safety-Backup Switch' with four wires:
      Black/Red (a pair)
      Red/Blue (a pair)

Think in terms of 'the guy on the assembly line'. All tasks must be fast. I hope this helps. - Dave

I found two smal wires about 4" long in the Box of bits that came with the care. They have a slightly smaller plug on the end.
        All connected and working now.

Thanks for the pics and advice.

The only problem I have now is the shifter light.

It is arcing out. I pulled it out and it looks like it must be missing a piece. There is nothing stopping the centre terminal pushing through the bulb tension spring.

Does anyone have an exploded diagram?

Or know if you can buy a new socket assembly.

You might be missing the fiber or insulating washer. Simple to make one if you have a suitable material like 1mm plastic, even wood will work, or whatever. OD must fit inside the tube, ID must be big enough to get the wire through. Just had mine apart recently as the button on the end came off. The spring acts to constantly apply pressure to the center of the bulb.

If you decide not to make one, you might be able to get what you need from Carl Heller ~ partsetal on here. Carl has tons of Squarebird parts from his parts cars and ships all over the world.

Nyles, thanks for posting the great pix! That should give him a good idea of what he should be seeing when he looks at his shift light parts breakdown.

Circled in red is the fiber insulator that I think he is missing.

                      Hi guys,

Just letting you know your information was brilliant.
I was able to fabricate the missing disc and now reassembled and working.

                      Thanks again for your help.
