Maximun tire width to fit '61 with skirts

Has anyone experienced the process of finding the maximum tire width that is practical for a '61??

I'm thinking about 15 x 7 wheels with 215/55 or 60 tires to go with. Is this size too large to get them on and off and/or to cause rubbing?

    Any thoughts or insight?

    Thanks,

I am running 235/45 R17's on my 63 on 17 x 7" wheels. The front have 3.5" backspacing, while the rear wheels have 5" backspacing. The whole package works great, no rubbing, and the skirts are no problem.

This set up is within 1/4" of the overall height of the original wheels and tires, so there are no alignment or speedometer issues, either.

      Very Sharp '63!

Your '63 looks great. Thanks for the info. The wheels I'll be putting on are American Racing with 4" backspace. If you're running 235's with plenty of room I may go up to 225's or so.

I'll post photos when I get them on the car, probably early January.

      Thx again,

      Ray

If you are running 7" wide wheels, 4" backspacing may not clear the skirts. My 5" backspacing leaves BARELY 1" from the skirt lip to the outermost wheel lip.
