1959 power seat repair
I recently purchased a 1959 HT with AC Windshild Washer, Power seat windows brakes and steering, I am trying to get the power seat to work.The components look to be very clean, no corosion or rust, all the wires are nice and intact. I pulled the seat out of the car and when I appply 12v power and hit the switch, the relay clicks (only the forward and back relay) but the motor kind of just has a light hummm. I disconnected the motor, it turns freely but I noticed when I apply power it seems to freeze from rotating. I this a sign of bad motors? I also noticed that if I jumper from one relay to the other the up and down realy will click when power is applied. This is my first t bird and I would appreciate any help or checklist I might follow to troubleshoot the power seat problem to get it to work, thank you.

Hi Gene, and welcome to Squarebirds! I have been down that power seat path before with my '59 Tbird. As I recall from when we were working on my power seat motors, it sounds like your motor is bad. If it freezes up when you apply power to it, that is not good. I had to replace mine. Once the motor was replaced it all worked good again. You can get replacement motors from our numerous vendors. I got mine from Bird Nest, but others should have them also. Look on the main page here, and you will find several vendors listed. Click on the Links button.

Do you have the wiring diagram ??? Multimeter??
You could start by making sure all the wiring is in order and no one has messed with it.
sounds like your relay works fine.
If you decide the motor is failing, you might try a shop that specializes in motors (like for power tools) and let them have a look at it. Basically every motor comes down to a field and an armature and if they isolate which one has a problem, you might get away with replacing just that part from a salvage yard, if you budget is tight.
If the system has a short in it, seems like you would pop a circuit breaker.
The parts list I have from Mac's shows a coupling. It might be missing or stipped or something, and your motor is just sitting there spinning... worth checking.
There is also the matter that the poor thing has not had lubrication in possibly 50 years.
If you can get the whole system out on the workbench and start methodically looking at it, that might be good. An ammeter could show you how much current is being drawn. Meanwhile the seat could go back in and you get to use the car.

get a spare battery up on the bench, make up some jumper wires of decent gauge (thickness), look at the diagram and simulate what happens in the car.1958 Hardtop

John,
thank you for that suggestion, although thats basically what i have tried and that leads me to believe that the motors ar bad, I wi;ll look int gtting those rebuilt, thanks again.Comment
