Tbirds at Muscle Car Madness, New Zealand

Alistair has been on holiday to the South Island! Here is what he had to say about getting the loan engine and making the trip the Muscle Car Madness.. He sends his regards to you.

Yes, I got the loan engine of my club mate. It has been a major help, allowing me to use the car through summer. The trip to the South Island went really well, we did 2400km (1400 miles) without any major issues, apart from a broken rear air bag mount which we had repaired while we were away.

The show had some quite different Tbirds, a ’63 (if I recall correctly) with portholes added to the roof pillar, and ’59 done up Nascar style.

I got the engine that Dave (simplyconnected) pointed out on eBay, plus the same guy supplied a bunch of engine parts. It got shipped early January, and the crate is due here on feb 4. Then I’ll get the machining etc done, source some more parts, and hope to have the engine built and fitted over winter ready for next summer.

I’m thinking about getting an aftermarket alloy intake, plus there’s a place in the US that does custom headers to fit 61 to 66, so if I go ahead with that (I’ve already purchased a mild Comp Cam and lifters kit) it should wake the old girl up a bit

Below are the pix of the '62, '63 and '59 that he sent me.

Okay, I think that 59 is way to cool.

Maybe I should have a friend on mine that does vinyl do that on my yellow one and not worry bout bodywork for awhile?

Both of the T-Birds look good. I especially love the Nascar version. Just wish it was warm enough for a show here!

Here are some additional comments and pix that Alistair has shared, for me to post.

Street Machine and Muscle Car Madness was a four-day event with bands, drive-in movie, a rod run, buskers, a burnout competition. Model car display and scale model drag strip, food and refreshments, and a car show that attracted 1500 cars. This was the show's 20th anniversary.

The first pix was taken at an American style diner in Foxton, called '66 on 1', 1 being our State Highway that runs the length of the country.

The 2nd, 3rd & 4th pix are of the main show area at Muscle Car Madness, which is in Rangiora.

The 5th & 6th pix were taken as the show gets pretty busy.

The 7th pix was taken on Mangaweka's main street. We traveled the last leg home, roughly eight hours drive, with two AMC AMXs, a Malibu, a Plymouth Duster and a Camaro. It was fun.

The 8th pic was of the Tbird's dash and the Duster refelected in my son Brad's sunnies.

The 9th pic was of the cars lined up for the ferry that took us from Wellington at the bottom of the North Island, to Picton at the top of the South Island. It's around a three-hour crossing. Approximately 80 street machines, classics and hot rods made the crossing to attend the show.

The last pic is of a pretty red '59 convertible that Alistair got a pic of...

In the pictures of the mass of cars on display at Muscle Car Madness there's a '55 F100 painted a a goldy-metallic brown colour - it's mine!

I had a blast at that event, camped out at the venue and 'socialised' a bit...

Alistair, this is a great inspiration for me. Along with Dano, I'm counting down the days... We're in the middle of our cold months right now. My classic cars are calling but I'm too cold to answer.

Scumdog, I see your '55 truck in a couple pic's. I'd love to see it in person, some day.

Robin & I went to the Henry Ford Museum on Saturday, just to hang out. This is the Wienermobile that I used to see as a kid, living in Chicago. It drive slowly, covering all the neighborhood streets, and 'Oscar' handed out little plastic hotdog-whistles. Would any kid ever forget THAT? Mom only bought Oscar when it was on sale, dispite our relentless begging (I have 4 sib's).

Of course, the museum had a hot dog restaurant- Click Here
And, you KNOW I had to have a foot-long hotdog- Click Here

Alistair has a picture of Scumdog's '55 F-100 taken at this event and sent it to me. He said that Scumdog has had it for years and drives the tires off it! Thanks for sending the pic, Alistair! Here it is!

When I live in San Pedro, CA in the '90s used to see weinermobiles quite often driving on the 405, 5 and 110 freeways. It was my understanding that there was at that time a fleet of like 18 of them based out of Los Angeles.

Oh, Jed... I'm talkin' about in the mid-50's (and dating myself). Oscar Mayer was huge in Chicago and Milwaukee, then.

Robin concurs with you, though. She saw the Wienermobile driving down Santa Monica Blvd., when she was a kid (a-hem, years after I was a kid). The success was so huge, OM did have a fleet by then.

As Dano said, the Wienermobile was seen by thousands (maybe millions). What a shtick! After seeing the Wienermobile, no kid asked mom for a Butterball turkey or a Tyson chicken... we wanted an Oscar Mayer wiener! Every time we obnoxiously blew that whistle was another reminder. (... 'cause if I were an Os-car Mayer wiener, every one would be in love with me...) -brilliant marketing.
