    1157 Bulb Question

The double filament 1157 bulb is used in the tail lights and parking lights of the 1958-1960 Thunderbirds. Does anyone know why import 1157 bulbs do not work in these cars. The parking lights go on, but the turn signals do not work. American made GE and Sylvania bulbs work fine. The bulbs look nearly identical. Does anyone know what the difference is the causes the import bulbs not to work?

I ask this because domestic made bulbs are getting increasingly difficult to find.

    RE: 1157 Bulb Question

Don`t put anything unAmerican in you Ford. I refused to put in a gas guage relay in because it was made in Mexico. It is sacreligious. I opted for a used one I found in a wrecking yard. As a matter of fact I have collected a few over the years.

      RE: 1157 Bulb Question

      hi
I have the Ford Shop Manual for the 1958. It does not list the
1157 bulb as being used for anything.

This would not explain the differences in performance between domestic and imported bulbs, but if memory serves correctly, blinker circuits are sensitive to having the right wattage bulb.

Also the blinker unit tends to, in some cases, deteriorate over time.
You can buy functional equivalents in auto parts stores for very little money.
