    Exhaust

When I had the oil changed in my 1960 yesterday, they told me the left side exhaust hanger was broken ahead of the differential. Sure enought the left side exhaust is hanging low.

I called Thunderbird Headquarters and they told me there is no hanger there. Birds Nest seemed to know exactly what I needed. The Technical Book shows an intermediate hanger just ahead of the rear axle. Is this what I need to replace and is there any trick to it?

John, since you didn't say which engine you have, maybe both vendors are correct. Check out these exhaust systems:

John; If you have a 352 then there is an exhaust hanger at the top of the crook that goes over the rear axle and another hanger behind the muffler that fastens to the rear bumper brace. That is the only 2 hangers that should be there. That's 2 on each side. When I put a new exhaust on my 60 bird the left hanger over the axle was broken also.

It is an easy fix and any muffler shop should havr that hanger.

      Hope this helps, Gary

I have a '58 with a 352 and it has the 4 hangers just described. A cautionary note on the front ones.

The bolts that hold them to the body are self tapping bolts that go into the vertical portion of the body under the seats. Do not overdo the torque on the bolts or the holes can strip out (previous owner of mine did exactly that).
