    trunk lid "fit" question

Lid fits in place pretty well, except for the front left corner. It is about 1/2" too high.

The adjustment slots on the trunk hinge are slid as far down as the bracket will allow.

I'm thinking I need to remove the hinge and make the adjustment slots 1/2" longer, then the lid corner would sit lower. I can add more steel with a welder if need be...

Am I on target here, or is there another trick I am missing?

    Thanks

Dakota, unless something DRASTIC happened, how did it close correctly before?

Yeah, you can remove the hinge, weld a 1/2" extension, but I have a question: What changed?

The hinge already offers a long adjustment, but you're at the end of your rope. Was there an accident that folded the hinge closed? Is you decklid still hemmed ok? Did the inner panel separate from the outer skin (possibly from rust)? You may want to investigate the whole picture.

I hope this helps. - Dave

      All good points above.

The trunk lid was like this when I got the car.
It's just another little "detail" for me to sort out...

The other side of the lid lines up real nice, but that hinge is also at the end of it's adjustment range.

it's possible that the lid is either warped or was hit in a previous life. Next is the body has been hit and everything is out of whack.

Might be an idea for you to crawl in the trunk with a flashlight, shut the trunk lid and compare the closure action and seating of each spring so to see how each is closing and sitting. Make sure to have a partner ready to let you back out. That might help you to make a determination of what is wrong.

There isnt any "give" to the lid when a person presses down on that high corner. Everything seems pretty solid.

And the hinge appears to be ok.

I've whispered to the car as nicely as possible, but she wont tell me any secrets about her past.

FIXED. Had to modify the hinge. I also painted both hinges with Eastwood "Underhood Black", painted the underside of the trunk lid with the Eastwood black, and some other touch ups in the trunk area. Turned out real good. Had to get two neighbors to help with the alignment while I laid down inside the trunk with a ratchet...

Congrats on the good fit. Isn't it always amazing that there seems to be a solution for every problem? Some much easier then others. What's your next tbird project to tackle?
