    Problem solved for $7.95

I received the new ballast resistor last night and immediately installed it. The old one had two thin parallel coiled wires while the replacement had one thicker coiled wire. The old unit looked like the wires were corroded and possibly even broken. The old unit tested 2 volts at the coil while the new one was almost 6 volts. I held my breath and turned the ignition switch to start. Wonder of wonders, it ran 90% better. I believe the engine will smooth out once it warms up to operating temperature. I'll take it for a test drive this weekend.

Remember only 1958 and 1959 had ballast resistors. 1960 had the resistor integral with the ignition wire.

Where did you get the part and do you have part number?

I purchased mine from Mac's Auto Parts on the internet. Cost with shipping was about $14. It's called an ignition coil resistor/wire (circuit breaker) and is part number B8A-12250-A. I'm sure the other T-Bird vendors sell a similar part. Took the Bird out for the first time since I purchased it 6 months ago and went for a 5 mile ride to the cleaners. Make it on my errands and then back home again with no problems. Will need to adjust too high idle as well as brakes (which I replaced) as they are now almost to the floor. I'm starting to actually hate this beast a lot less now that it can actually move under its own power.
