    Roadster Wheels for your TBird

    A message for TBird lovers: I ordered caps with the red TBird logo to go with my Roadster wire wheels for my 1960 Thunderbird. The caps I ordered had some rust inside. I was referred by a FunBird club member to a local company called Motorspot at www.hobbycar.com, located in Orange California. The owner, Dave Adler, introduced me to Ray, the owner of Roadster Wheels, located in Garden Grove California. Roadster Wheels manufactures wire wheels for Thunderbirds (among other wheels and cars). Motorspot is a dealer for Roadster Wheels.

    Both Dave and Ray took a personal interest in the problem and spent considerable time with me while they developed a solution. It was decided that Ray would have the caps sandblasted to remove the traces of rust then would chrome the backs of the caps to prevent rust in the future. Both Dave and Ray went out of their way to help me with a solution.

    Based on my personal experience, I would highly recommend Motorspot and Roadster Wheels for anyone considering wire wheels. Both companies and their owners obviously stand one hundred percent behind their wire wheels, which, importantly, are made right here in California USA from American steel.

      The wire whls are definently cool ! I have em on my 60. They're the 56 spoke reproduction ones. My only bit of advise is . . . Some of these wheels are advertised as "Tubeless" . I strongly recommend the use of tubes though. The spoke holes are sealed with a silicon bead. I don't believe they really seal 100 %. The outer row of spokes runs right by the tire bead. It would be very easy to damage that bead if the tire installer doesn't have the right equipment (or the knowledge) to avoid a mis-hap. I've had the wires on mine for about a year now. I've been back and forth to Zenith Wheel in Campbell Ca where I bought the wheels at least a dozen times. He's re-sealed them, he's mounted the tires (He was real quick to blame my buddy at Tire Outlet), The last tire Zenith mounted loses aprox 2-3 lbs (per day). One wheel we gave up on and put a tube in it. It's the only one that doesn't lose air. So, I've had it. They're all getting tubes. Remember too, tubes for radials are diff that Bias-ply. Tubes are fine. Just remember Fix a flat and products like that won't work. If you get a nail in your tire, it will go flat. Just check your spare and keep your jack and tools with you and you won't have a problem.

                      I try to buy American made products, but since the mid-eighties it has become increasingly difficult. Now, with some products it is nearly impossible to find a domestically produced item. Even some of the reproduction parts for our Thunderbirds are now made overseas. Frankly, it is next to impossible to get these trim parts made in the US anymore, as the number of tooling shops and factories has rapidly disappeared in US in the last thirty years.

                          Yeah, even on my Harley, most of the parts come from overseas.
                          Showa forks (Japan) Kehin Carb (Honda) The engine is German (somewhat) Oh well.

                          On another note (speaking of buying American)
                          We just picked up a 65 Spec Edition Landau. Like the 60 wasn't enough fun. So let the games really begin. I guess I can put the capers on the 64-6 message board.
                          Nice car though. Drives nice, stops good. A few quirks like pwr windows don't work (Imagine that)

                          The wipers are run off the Pwr steering pump. How goofy is that?
                          Why couldn't they just have an electric mtr like everybody else?!
                          Anyhow, the hose that feeds that leaks.
                          Fun Fun Fun as they say.

                              Those hydraulic wipers work great if there are no leaks.

                              Good luck with the new project. Ask your questions in the 1964-66 section. We will try to help.
