    Windshield Washer Pump

Here's a dumb question for you (at least the first one)... I pulled off the windshield washer pump from my '60 to clean it the other day. It seems as though the wheel that engages on the belt is locked up on the inside. I can get it to turn about 1/8 of the way around and then it stops.

First question... it IS suppose to turn freely, correct?
    Second... is this typical?
Thirdly... is it fixable and worth the effort?

    Yes.

Yes. These things rarely worked for long-even when they were brand new.

It may be fixable. You will need to drill out the 3 rivots & remove the center pin holding the "wheel" onto the center shaft. Then you can take the mechanism apart to see what went wrong. If it is worth the effort, is a decision that is up to you. I would say don't plan on using this O.E. washer system often though. If nothing else, I would keep it installed on the car just for the original look. These windshield washer systems are becoming more and more rare each year....

I got one that was frozen up and was able to put penetrating oil in it and eventually get things turning OK. I don't think the little bearing was sealed in any way so prone to rust.

Anders, we need you to get ahold of a DVD recorder and take action footage of yours engaging and pumping and squirting and the whole nine yards!! You can be an inspiration for guys looking at the whole thing saying to themselves "No way is this stuff ever gonna work! "

Personally, if ever there was a Rube Goldberg system, this TBird wiper/washer system must be it!

It does work! Itīs not like my Volvo S80, but it spitts up two stings of water on the windshied. Quite cute to be honest. One have to remember I donīt need much water as the wipers are pretty tired in the first place. They also works, but only when "out of pressure". When accelerating, they come to an halt, but if I just lighten the throttle, they are back on track. On idle, they stop again, making driving in rain some kind of "planning the visability"....
But I guess thatīs just Ruth showing her personality.

Will try to take a pic as evidence. Canīt drive at the moment as my steering wheel is at Jed Zimmerman for restoration. Rear foam also ordered Just got the front from Larrys, and this time, they slipped through custom!!!! Bingo!

My windshield washer system was working properly until the other day - then suddenly it wasn't working. There was fluid in the bag, the vacuum mechanism was working but no jets. I took the pump off and took it apart but everything seemed OK - neat little gear pump with two brass gears! Put it back together and still nothing so started tracing the hoses for kinks or pinches. Nothing. So took the bag off and nothing came out of the bag. It turns out the outlet in the bag was plugged. Some back pressure with an air hose fixed that and now the system works again. I must have had the pump apart at some point because it is held together with small machine screws rather than the original rivets.

BTW if anyone is interested, there is a NOS washer pump for a '60 Galaxie currently listed on eBay. The control mechansim is different than mine but it may fit a 352. It has the same pump as mine. The part number appears to be listed incorrectly (17764 vs. 17664).
