Interest in article on headlight switch???

    Hi guys!

I was working under my dash and considering collecting information for an article on the headlight switch as people have written in questions a number of times in the past.
Here is what I would possibly include:

    a) how to remove it (incl that tricky spring)

    b) photos

    c) wiring info - who goes to what

    d) how to by pass the rheostat when it breaks (and it will) so your instrument lights still work (easy to do)

Lemme know if you are interested...

Technical, hands on information with pictures, always a big help and worth-while to pull together.

I'd be glad to contribute photos that I think will help. PM me an email and I'll send some shortly. I can scan the diagrams from Osborns manuals, someone else would have to advise if we can post from his book, maybe all we need to do is acknowledge the source of the scans. If someone else answer this, I'll provide the images from scanning.

Hi Ken, we're involved in publishing here in New Zealand, I'm not sure on copyright laws in the US but I imagine it'd be much the same, or more robust. Posting articles/images on the Internet is deemed to be publishing, and if that material is taken from a book that's copyright then the individual/organisation that published the material is deemed to be in breach of copyright.
Having said that, often (as you suggest) a simple email to the book's publisher requesting permission to post the scanned images is all that's required. We don't usually object unless it's a competing media.
I wouldn't condone the 'publish and be ****ed' approach, but should somebody post copyright material on this site the worst thing that's likely to happen is an email or a letter asking that the matereial be removed. It's unlikely it would go further due to the cost of taking such a case to court.
Case in point: I read an interesting item on the Autoblog part of this site. The article was originally published by a newspaper in Kentucky. I weighed up the odds of this paper ever seeing its article reproduced in a New Zealand magazine, but decided to do the right thing anyway. I emailed the paper's editor, she responded immediately, gave us permisison and just asked for a credit in the byline and a copy to be mailed to her. Quick, easy, and everyone's happy.
Hope this rather long-winded reply helps.
          Cheers
          Alistair

            hi again,

OK... in response to overwhelming demand (Jon , Frank, Ken), I wrote it up. Would you be willing to read over it and see if it needs improvement?? It's at

When I get some feedback, I will make a final version and put it in the Tecnical Resources Library.

I am. Since I removed my lightswitch, during my "looking for fuses & get the stop light working" days, I have not been able to actually get the switch knob hook up correctly. Trying to hold, not hold, turn & hold, turn & not hold the releasing button in the back, the knob sometimes seems to stay in place while pulling it out for light, but more often, come loose, so I have to push and pull, to get it grip on what´s in there. I can live with it, but it´s anoying.

Let's see.... some lithium grease on the shaft might not hurt things...

To remove the shaft, I found the order of events mattered. Specifically I had to push the shaft all the way in, then push the silver button down, then pull the shaft out. No rotating needed.

Not sure if I addressed your problem though...

I do need to bypass that fine rheostat unit that has not worked correctly since I was Justin's age (he's my 6 yr old) . So I'd be interested in that.

                          hi John

If you read the article, you will see that bypassing it is
very easy to do (a common problem solved).

There is an NOS headlight switch on EBay. The seller says that the part # is B9AF-11654-A and it is good for 58-59 TBird and 1960 TBird except the convertible. Can any of you folks tell me what is different about the switch setup in the convertible?? Does the switch server some additonal function??
