    surge tank

Don't mess with fixing it , it will only be a bandaid. Once you strenthen one area another area that is weaker will spring a leak. Buy a new one, but buy the one that goes on the 61 - 63. It is made stronger. I fixed my old tank several times, only to have it leak within an few weeks or months. I bought a new one for the 58 - 60 only to have it spring a pin hole leak within a week. I bought the 61 - 63 and have had no trouble. If your radiator starts to leak, buy a new aluminum one from Surperior Radiator in Mich. My car has never run cooler, and it's leak free. Good luck Dude.

      replacing the overflow tank

Dave, when you say "get one for a 61-3" do you mean a second hand, original one or a reproduction one?

I have had my '58s tank repaired by a radiator shop annually. The tank itself is more than strong enough but the soldered joints just don't last. Considering the low pressure that is in these older systems, it's pretty annoying...

Of course it may be that I need to try a new radiator shop...

I guess I must be from the hills but why would a surge tank make your car run cooler? Just a question.

I think Dave meant the new aluminum radiator makes it run cooler George60HT

I have to disagree with buying a new surge tank. I went thru 2 new ones and they both sprung a leak.
I finally took the last one to a good radiator guy. He took it apart and showed me how crappy it was put together...very little solder - just enough to sell the thing. He resoldered everything and reassembled it and I haven't had a problem since. You have to find an old timer radiator guy to get it right.

I agree with Casey. If your surge tank is well soldered together it will hold for decades. Corrosion will make it difficult to re-solder a leak on an old tank. It needs to be completely disassembled, cleaned and then re-soldered.

If you get a new reproduction tank, I do not think it makes difference if you get a 1958-60 or a later style. They are made in the same factory in Taiwan. I would get the correct style, check it for leaks. If it leaks, it should be easy enough to take it apart and re-solder it properly.

I got my surge tank at Thunderbird HQ. The 61 - 63 has a plate in the middle that the 58-60 doesn't. After my original was fixed several times, they told me not to bring it back, and my mechanic agreed. Maybe I was lucky with my new one! I'll keep you posted if I have troubles.
