    temp gauge out of sinc

I had someone use a infrared gun on my cooling system and found that my radiator temp was 142 and at the expantion tank it was 161 yet my temp hand inside was registering the same as when it was 97 degrees outside. It is on the m in temp, question how do I calibrate my gauge or is it the sending unit.also does anyone use a 160 thermostat in there T-Bird and where is the hand under normal driving temp?

Calibration instructions for the gauges is on this site at http://www.squarebirds.org/gauge_adjusting.htm .

The normal operation temperature should be around the E and M of the gauge in 60 to 70 degree weather. It will move to the right in hotter temperatures. The curved squared off "U" under TEMP is the normal operating range of the gauge. The owner's manual warns that in stop and go traffic, especially with A/C, the needle may move to the H mark. Obviously these cars did not have a good cooling system. My 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII has a simialr analog temp gauge. Once the car reaches operating temperature it is right in the middle between hot and cold. It does not matter if it is 0 degrees or 100 degrees outside, A/C on or off, traffic or not.

You can use a 160 or 180 thermostat in your engine. Your car will not run cooler with a 160 degree thermostat. Do not run the car without a thermostat! Without the restriction of the thermostat, the water pump does not work well.

I "adjusted" my gauge using the instructions. It worked slick. I know in my mind it runs at 180 (give or take 5 deg). It just drove me up the wall having that needle sit on the "P". So now, it runs right on the "E" like Alexander says. As soon as time and $$$$ permit, I'll run some real gauges. But that's about 5 things down my list. Unfortunately, we're driving this car very little right now. I did drive it to work today (top down and all). But it will have gauges when we start driving it all the time.
