    Firewall Insulation Info Request

Tony & Liz got their '59 Tbird back from having it painted. He asked me this in email.

"Hi Ray, my car is home finally after 2 weeks of painting.

Would you be able to post a picture of the firewall, on the squarebird website?
i am unsure where the insulation goes? and how much coverage there is?"

Does anyone have any pictures of what the firewall looks like, with or without any insulation in place? Or have anything showing what the coverage of the insulation should be? If you do, please post them, or send them to me for posting. Thanks!

I'm getting my car back end of this week from paint and plan on putting a modern insulation/soundproofing everywhere I can. If your friend is not looking for a concourse original, I would suggest the same. The fiberboard stuff that I pulled off the firewall can't be as good as the modern material like Dynamat, etc.

      Firewall Insulation Info Request

Hi Matthew! Thanks for that information. When I went through the interior restoration, they did the same thing with mine. Put in that Dynamat type material, not only on the firewall, but also along the tranny hump and other places. When you get your Tbird back is it possible to take pictures of what it looks like across the firewall underneath there? I should have thought about doing that myself when they were working on mine, but did not. I would like to get some pictures of what it looks like with the insulation in place and without it. Since yours is already out, you can't do that. However, IF you should still have the insulation, could you lay it out on a floor and take some pictures of what it looks like? I would like to add this information to the TRL for future use by others. Thanks!

I don't know if this helps, but here is a picture from the '59 Shop Manual of what the firewall, left and right front floor pans and tranny hump looks like.

        recommendation

I went through the same process and ended up with an
insulator I am very happy with. It looks like the original
and has all the proper cut outs. You can order it with the cut outs punched but not removed and then use what you want. It looks original and fits extremely well. I ordered the entire kit for the car, floors, doors etc. I have the firewall insulator in and will add the rest when I have more of the interior done. I am doing the inside of the doors next before reinstalling the windows etc. I am sure you can buy the material and do it yourself cheaper but I liked the fact that this is their business. Just my experience.

Thanks for that information and link, Grant! I am going to post this information in the TRL for others to make use of. I passed this information on to Tony in case he did not see it. Here is the link that covers the '58-'60 hardtop. So now we have both links. I just posted both the convertible link and the hardtop link, plus the link for all 1955-1966 Tbirds for their products. You will find it in the TRIM section right underneath Headliner information. I also added the company to the Advertisements section here on the Forum.

BTW, here are some pix of Tony & Liz's '59 Tbird after coming out of the paint shop. Pretty!

Ray thanks for posting the pixs of Tony's shell, as it came out of paint. It sure brings into perspective for all of us the vast " hump " Ford had to overcome with the Cruise-O-Matic transmission protruding into the interior of the TBird. No wonder they wanted to cover it up

Thanks for the source info. If Tony wants a picture of a cross section of the firewall insulator I have the steering column section out and can post one. His paint is gorgeous and the attention to detail impressive. Grant

                        LOL!!

Thanks for correcting me guys. I saw the dimpels on the door and instantly thought of the FIVE-EIGHTS chevrons going in that location.... not the FIVE-NINES spear.

                        My mistake...

Not sure about this idea, but it struck me; why not use truck bed liner spray?

The stuff is really good at sealing out moisture and sound deadening. Most of them are paintable, too.

It might not be good if you show your car but if you live in the Rust Belt (like I do), spray-on liner might be more beneficial than that tar paper cardboard stuff that falls apart and traps water (which promotes floor rust). The gas pedal area is usually the first to go.

I just did that very thing last week on the trunk floor of my 57. A lot of the original coating was loose, and I knew primer and paint would not seal everything down tight around all the edges of the chips. About $18/qt and it was indeed paintable with no bleed through to the Inca Gold paint. It appears a very good way to seal off a floor.
