Tom ~ scumdog is on the road to Timaru to a S&S. Here is what he had to say and the pic he sent.

"Hi folks, Stopped in Dunedin for a coffee from the ubiquitous Maccas! Couldn't find another handy coffee place. 120 miles from here to Timaru. Cheers from a sunny Dunedin, which is the 'Edinburgh of the South'. Tom"

On The Road To Timarua S&S

Here are some more comments and pix from Tom ~ scumdog on his way to the Timarua S&S.

"Hi all, We had a cruise this afternoon to various workshops and private garages. This stop was at Geraldine Auto Restoration (from memory!). The workmanship was A1 as Yellowbird can attest when I FaceTimed him. This photo was taken outside the workshop with the attention getting sedan perched on top of the 'dunny' - down-under speak for toilet! It's been a long time since I've seen bodywork and paint to the standard this firm produces. Our sleep tonight will not be enhance by the National get-together of 'boy-racers' (what you Stateside guys call 'tuners') in Timaru! Saw one other Thunderbird, a Flairbird. It was at a supermarket and I haven't seen it since.. Hopefully the S&S tomorrow will produce more Thunderbirds! Tom"

"Lunch today! Hi Guys, I must have been in a bad reception area and the e-mail I tried to send with this picture disappeared! Anyway, here is Christine at a picnic spot at Glenavy, north of Oamaru and 35miles from Timaru. We had a light lunch here before heading north. Its 10:25pm and I'm hitting the hay, catch y'all tomorrow. Tom"

Here are a couple of pix he sent!

On The Road To Timarua S&S

Tom ~ scumdog, has arrived at Timarua and here are some comments on what he has seen so far and a few more pix, including a '59 and a '64 Tbird.

"Hi Ray, I eventually found a couple of Thunderbirds, the black '64 was driven all over USA by the current owner before it was shipped to NZ. Hence the licence plate and the line around the body with place names of towns they passed through. The picture of the interior of the '57 Chev will have the Chev guys in the US scratching their head - (a) it's on the right hand end of the dash and Edsel(b) it's a '56 dash! That's what we got in NZ back then - left-overs tacked together. My '63 Galaxies had the speedo set up from a '59 Edsel and was right-hand drive!
      More later... Tom"

      Here are the pix.

Quite a few American and English cars used to be cute down into 'utes' way back years ago, Pontiac Laurentians, Ford Anglian etc. (mainly due to a relative shortage of utes at the time)

Now Japanese utes are readily available this doesn't happen so often.

'Ute' is short for utility, a name/description that in the early days was applied to any pick-up truck based on a car body/frame I.e Ranchero type vehicles, F100s etc were still known as pick-ups back then however I have noticed over the last 20 years or more the title ute gets applied (manly by younger ones!) to anything other than a full sized truck.

Scumdog On The Road to Methven!

Tom has had his Flairbird out again, as it is that time of year Down Under, while many of us up North have tucked their Birds in their nest for the Winter. Here is what he had to say and three pix.

"Hi Ray, A very quick e-mail to show you a couple of pics from the rod run we are attending at Methven, we are at the 'grasskhana' event. Lots of speed and lots of dust, I took the Thunderbird out but did not post a winning time - but didn't disgrace the Thunderbird owners either! More later, Regards from NZ Tom."

On The Road To Timarua S&S

Tom sent me 3 more pix taken at the grasskhana.

"Hi Ray, Three more pics from the grasskhana. The first is a 450 cid (stroked 390) with 4speed '67 Cougar, the second a 350 Chev powered Model A Ford and the last a 283 Chev powered '49 Ford two-door. The Cougar apparently suffered an alarming drop in oil pressure during its run and the '49 Ford had a full disc wheel trim get dislodged and jambed in the wheel-well.
It's 1am here so I'm off to bed! Regards, Tom."

                          At Methven Car Show

Tom ~ scumdog, was not the only Tbird owner at this Car Show, it turns out. Here is what he had to say and a few more pix.

                          "Hi Ray,
I thought Christine and I were going to be the only Thunderbird owners in Methven - then these 'birds showed up! The yellow Babybird & the Red '59 Squarebird are both from Ashburton, about 20 miles from Methven. Here's our '66 in the line-up at Methven. It's not a real big show, about 200 cars with another 40 cars of interest parked out on the street. Nice sunny warm 80F+ day with a slight breeze. Regards, Tom."
