  • '58 convertible on Ebay

I saw this listed on Ebay. Looking at the data plate the codes don't make any sense. The trim code should be two letters, not numbers. The build date of April can't be right since the first '58 convertible wasn't built until May or June I believe and the trans code of 6 is wrong, should be a 4.

Not only that, but what is with the letter J in the 4th position of the VIN #? According to http://www.tbird.org/DataPlate/vdata.htm that 4th digit should be an H = Body Style (Thunderbird). That is probably a replacement Data Plate and someone did not get their information correct.

J is correct for the convertibles of 58, as is the 76A. But yeah the trim and axle should raise an eyebrow. I do respect the dealer for being upfront with disclosing the underbody rust and providing photos of the area.

The car is nearby in PA, have you looked at the car yet John P? It would be interesting to see if the chassis VIN stamping match the data plate and title.

I know where the dealer is but I haven't looked at it. I did send him a message questioning the discrepancies but didn't get any response.

I too agree that it shows integrity that the dealer is up front on the rust and with all the photos on his listing. Not often you get undercarraige / under door shots showing the issues so that the purchaser can make a decision. The price is reasonable but could be another $10K in restoration
