Rotate the flywheel until all six bolts go in easy. It can only go on one way.

I don't know how you 'marked it' but John is right, the flywheel/flex plate only goes on one way.

Is it possible you are trying to put a flywheel or flex plate on backward? You indicated, 'flywheel' which makes it a stick shift which is rather rare.

If your trans is in fact an automatic, make sure your torque converter's drain holes are visible through the flex plate holes before tightening the four nuts. - Dave

        Flywheel Alighnment Issue

        Thanks guys....
This is a manual transmission flywheel out of my 1965 F-250 truck. There are 2 marks ....0ne on the crank and the other on the flywheel (factory scribe marks). When they are lined up, 3 of the bolts won't start in the holes. Should I ignore the marks and just go by finding the right position for all the bolts to thread in?

If so why the factory marks????

Thanks for your quick reply. Much appreciated !!!

Yes, Russ. But, I'm not aware of any factory marks. The bolts will simply go in one way. When you find the right alignment, they should have no obstruction so you can tighten them by hand. Make sure you use thread locker. - Dave

This engine came out of a '63 or '64 Ford F-100 truck. I used it in my '60 TBird. Thought I was SOL after I bought the engine and found the crank to be different from my original. Finally realized it only had an insert in the crank for the manual transmission - my Tbird has an automatic.

The automatic tranny "flywheel" bolted right up - even rotated it 180 when I pulled the engine to work on manifold leaks just to see if that would eliminate a little vibration.

I think my flywheel/flex plate would have fit at any orientation??

That insert pulled right out - yay!

Auto tranny flex plate or flywheel installed.

Let us know what you find.

            Eric

Edit - come to think of it I may have only rotated the flywheel on the torque converter and not the crank - been to long and I've got pumpkin pie on the brain.
