Windshield removal woes

1959 Convertible

I need to replace the gasket on the windshield. So far its taken 2 hours to cut out 2 feet of fossilized gasket. Not going to replace the windshield on this driver. However it was likely replaced at least once because I can't locate the FoMoCo logo (or any for that matter) anywhere on the glass. It appears that strip caulk was used to seal the gasket. Its a big mess.....Is there an easier way or just slog forward!!!

Normally you push the windshield out from the inside after all the moldings have been removed. You need to loosen the gasket on the inside flange. When in doubt follow the shop manual.

Use a utility knife to cut away the flange that covers the outside of the glass. With the knife blade parallel to the glass cut in as far as the blade allows then with the blade perpendicular cut away the rubber strip you've created. If you have not exposed the edge of the glass, repeat the process, then gently push out from the inside moving all around the edge. It usually takes about 4 blades. Carl
