  • Originality in a 58 convertible

Hi everyone. I have some questions about a 58 convertible that I'm looking at. Specifically:

It is a white car with a black engine bay. Should the engine bay match the external colour?
The doors have plain vinyl trim at the bottoms and not an embossed oval pattern. Is this correct?
The kick board trim is plain black. Should it match the door trims in pattern and colour? The interior trim is turquoise/white.
The trunk is lined in grey felt and not that check pattern board I've seen on most cars

The car was listed on Craigslist in New Mexico in late February. The VIN is H8YJ134651 - not on the registry. Apparently it now has a 390 motor. I know it's a rarer model but I'm starting to get the feeling that it needs too much other work. It's good to know what an original or sympathetically restored car should have.

Never assume conspiracy when mere incompetence will explain things.

engine bays were the same color as the body when they left the factory. kickboards matched the rest of the interior's color scheme.

Depends on how much you want to spend to make it correct, but the '58 Convertible is a very rare Bird.

          Originality in a 58 convertible

The bottom of the door panels, to be correct, would have that oval panel instead of a plain one. Here is what Leonard's Yellowbird's '58 door look like and it is original. He has manual windows on his Tbird. His kick panels are white as I recall. Gray felt would not be original for that car. The checkered pattern should be. Here is a pic of an original '58 Trunk also.

Thanks everyone. Actually, I have the check-list but am not up to that point yet. I was just going over the photos I was sent and a few things caught my eye as being not quite right.

If the interior is turquoise and white it was probably white originally and someone painted the engine compartment black.
