View Full Version : Tranny Problems Of Inheritance

I recently re-did a portion of the front end on my 59. Replaced the ball joints, tie rod ends, and did some rehab to one of the control arms which had a small crack and a broken shock retainer. This was months ago and I really haven't drove the bird too much since then, it lives jacked up in my garage.

So the other day I had noticed that I had some washers that I remember that fit in FRONT of the lower control arms. So i went out yesterday and dropped the coil spring and lower control arms back out so I could install the shims.

I noticed that while it takes 1 shim on the passenger side, it takes 3 on the drivers side. That's how many total I have is 4 total shims.

My question is, is this normal for one side to be shimmed more than the other?

Current arrangement
Drivers side FRONT lower control arm 3 shims
Passenger side FRONT lower control arm 1 shim


I know not to tighten the control arm mounting bolts until the car is lowered and weight is on the vehicle, but I haven't done that yet as I ordered a master cylinder from a 68 mustang with drum brakes that I am going to retrofit onto the bird just so I can actually go for a drive.

K done.

I found something else maybe you can help me with. It seems my transmission has a 3rd steel line coming from it, near the top. The other 2 are running to the trans cooler. This 3rd one runs from the TOP FRONT PASSENGER side towards the REAR and leaks fluid like crazy. I added a rubber hose to it and ran it back to the transmission dipstick tube to stop the mess.

Is this supposed to be a vent or what do you think.

'59 transmissions have a vent fitting with a cap over it that allows air in and out but later transmissions do have a vent tube that usually runs along the transmission as you can see in the second picture. The picture that I borrowed from Dave Dare's rebuild shows the vent fitting just above the trans cooler line where your tube is. I inverted it as it would look in the car. Do you know what year your transmission is. It should not be leaking as it's above where the fluid would normally be.

I went out to take a closer look at the transmission.

I'm going to need a few cans of brake clean before i'll be able to decipher any relevant tag numbers.

It seems my transmission has a vacuum line on it, which might mean it was from a '63 or later. I believe the engine was out of a 63 mercury maruader, i don't think my pap would of used that cars transmission but it appears he may have.

I don't have any issue with it shifting really except I noticed a little delay with it kicking in to gear, when selected.

I'm afraid to remove the rubber hose from the "vent tube" but i guess i will let the car run for a while on the jackstands with the hose off and see how much total fluid ends up coming out of it.

Ill report back some findings once i get some cleaning under there and once i unplug the vent

If you are lucky and the data tags have not been removed from the case, look for something like these. If you can find these, they will tell you which model tranny you have.

I had to leave in Post #1 dealing with the Shim problems because it is the anchor post of the initial thread on his Shim questions. But here in this thread you will find the posts regarding his questions on his tranny... Soon to be followed by a new one on brakes. Please... keep your threads on subject... Me included! :D

Maybe you have gotten really lucky and ended up having a C6 in there and you do have a vacuum line to a modulator and the modulator has gone bad. Hard to tell from those close ups. But one easy way to tell, shoot us a photo of what the bell housing looks like. Does it look like the trans has a housing integral to the transmission (IE, it's all one piece), or is it two different sections?

If you do have a C6 in there, I'd be curious to see photos of how the shift linkage was done, since I am midway through installing a C6 in my 58.

It's definitely not a C6. The cooler lines are in completely different locations.
