I've just acquired a fairly nice 66 hardtop. It needs some tinkering, after all, its a 52 yr old car. one major issue, it has no brakes. I've only done a cursory examination, but, the master cylinder was full to the brim, after pumping the petal several times, its not. no signs of leaks on the inside if the wheel, backed plates, etc. no fluid on the ground, but the bottom of the master cylinder is wet. you cant pump up the brakes. the petal is slow to react. I'm thinking master cylinder and/or power boost pump.

If the master cylinder is wet most likely the fluid is also going into the booster. That's probably where you are losing most of it. Try a new master cylinder first before you go through the expense of a new booster.

I 'second' what John said.
Your master cylinder should not leak.
Your booster should not leak, either.

When both leak, your brake fluid will magically disappear until the booster fills to the vacuum line. Then, periodically, white smoke will come out your exhaust because your engine is ingesting brake fluid.

A new master and booster is in your car's future when this happens. - Dave

Thank you gentlemen, you've reinforced my own thoughts on the matter.
I'm thinking that replacing the master cylinder AND the boost pump. that way I'll know what I have. I did notice that someone has added a spring to help pull the petal back up.

Do a post search here for my thread on replacing the booster and master. It's a lot cheaper to go with a generic kit, stay with a 1" master to have the same pedal feel.

I count three springs on my OEM throttle linkage.

Good to know. One thing I noticed. The rear brake drums had those clips on the lug bolts like they put on in the factory. I had someone tell me "that means the brake drums have never been off. You can't buy those clips"
Seriously? This is a 52yr old car. Surely the rear drums have been off at some point.

The majority of the time these clips/spring nuts are indeed discarded but quite often they are put back. Not a big deal one way or the other (even if judged to highest standards you are not asked to remove a wheel and check for them). I am certain they can be purchased.

Any suggestions on a source for a power booster? I replaced both front rubber hoses and rebuilt the rear brakes. I have brakes now, but the pedal is hard.
