I'm getting close to finishing my 64 convertible after years in garage. I'm working on installing the top mechanisms and getting top working. I had the flip lid gear box apart, it appears to be in good shape and the gear looks good. The problem is when I fold up the flip lip from the up/extended position the panel free falls for 3 or so inches and then works normally after that both up and down. I'm not sure what the issue is. Maybe the worm gear? Any ideas? Thanks.

The worm gear is a known problem that causes the flip lid to sag. There is an adjustment screw on the housing that you can try to tighten it up but once the gear wears it won't do any good. Replacement gears are available from any of the Thunderbird vendors.

Also check the housing around the adjustment screw. If it is cracked the adjustment screw won't stay tight and the gear won't hold.

Thanks. The round gear looked fine. Is there any reason it should it be replaced at the same time as the worm gear? I did adjust the slack with the set screw and the case is not cracked so I think I'm OK there.

Neither gear is cheap so I would start with the worm gear first since that seems more prone to wear and see if that fixes it.

I'll give that at try. Thanks for your help.
