Have a 63. Makes the typical "groans" I can live with that.. However:

Several leaks..

One at the pump somewhere.. Not too bad, but requires fill up after a few drives.

Second at the shaft (not sure of name) that comes out of the gearcase under the car and points toward the ground.

This one is a steady drip when running, slow drip when sitting. Have to fill the reservoir every time I drive it now.

Has "stopped working" a few times while driving, likely went empty, but could be failing??

QUESTIONS:

Replace all components?

Remove and rebuild?

Can a shade-tree mechanic do this? Looks kinda like a specialist sort of repair?

Anyone know the cost of parts? Cost of a mechanic doing this?

As far as the leak from the pump it's most likely the seal that goes around the shaft. There's a rebuild kit available for it. It's not that difficult to rebuild. Just follow the directions. As far as the leak from the steering gear it's most likely the pitman shaft seal. The seal is not expensive but it's more involved to replace. There are places that will rebuild your steering gear but it's not cheap. If you have some mechanical ability it's worth trying yourself.

Once the arm is off, the seal isn't too bad to change.

One thing you get from having a mechanic do the work, is a warranty. So, consider that in your estimate. - Dave
