Hi All,

There have been a lot of threads on the best type of power steering fluid to use. I have a 62 Tbird. Some say use power steering fluid. Some say dont but use type "A" transmission fluid, some say type "F" because it has replaced type"A". Type "A" can still be purchased today I've heard?????

The idea is that the fluid needs to be compatible with Ford seals and it is anti-foaming hydraulic fluid. There are many brands of "power steering fluid" at auto parts stores. Most of them are nothing more than high-priced trans fluids.

I believe everyone should change their PS fluid because most systems have no filter. I replace mine with red trans fluid made for Ford cars. Your choice. Read your owner's manual or the Shop Manual for more specifics. Sometimes the pump (cap or dipstick) will specify the correct fluid as well. - Dave

They call for type "A". No one seems to carry A. Type "F" I guess replaces A. I guess Ford brand Type F will be my best choice.

TYPE A was superseded by DEXRON years ago.

TYPE F was not introduced until 1968.

They are not interchangeable.
