View Full Version : Just blew my vacuum advance!

Trying to be to perfect in cleaning and cleaned the distributor before installing. Had the air compressor nozzle too close passing by the vacuum advance and literally blew the vacuum advance control. Heard a pop like popping a balloon only a bit softer. It was an old rusty advance control and the previous owner had welded a longer arm on there for the duraspark condenser.
I also saw traces of spray paint on the membrane after I removed the advance control from the distributor. Maybe I would have needed a new one anyway? This was an old one but still had "motorcraft" on it.
Is it repairable? what kind of material is the membrane?
anybody have an old one somewhere I should I just by a new one. What brand is the best?

I just replaced mine that came with a rebuilt distributor with a BWD V309. The one with the rebuilt distributor didn't work correctly. There are a couple of other equivalent parts also and I don't think they are any different that I could tell when I was looking. The aftermarket units are much easier to adjust than the original and you should check to make sure it is set up correctly with a hand pump and gauge. More than likely, an old vacuum membrane is on its last legs and would have failed soon anyway. I'd say the diaphram itself is not repairable and have no idea what the material would be. also for that link. the motorcraft dd190 it will be,
It looks like its adjustable, don't know if it come with the nipple for the hose or this is for tubing I think.
If I do a search by rockauto but than under tbird 1960 it comes up with a different type but the connections to the condenser plate and distributor are the same. doesn't matter, my engine is the 352 but only (according to the casting number) it's from 1967. I good go for the cheaper type vacuum advance but the dd190 looks better and looks adjustable.
same time I can order the oilpump shaft also with stopper plate.

I have a spare one you are welcome to. The upper bushing is worn but I can check the rest of it is fine although I would double check it first for you.

On yours I would suggest checking the bushings for wear by seeing if the shaft has any wobble to it. This can make for a weird experience doing the timing.

In the states here in 2004 I recall being able to walk into an auto parts store and purchase a replacement off the shelf for an FE motor so that might indicate these as being reasonably available.

thank you very much for the offer, really nice of you.
But it won't be necessary, I have some more 'shopping' to do, several small things at rockauto or autozone and maybe some at Travers. So I can order these in one package. The ordering and shipping is not such a problem, I am just waiting and working day and night at the car to see what more comes up that I have to order so I can order it in one go.
Customs also no problem here as long as the value per shipment (excl.shipping cost) stays below 55-60 dollars than it is duty free and it only takes about 7 to 10 days before I have it if shipping with usps.

Just bought a rebuilt distributor with vacuum advance for my 352 from Advance Auto parts... less than $40
Comes with points installed too.
